CEI portable asphalt tanks combine a circulating hot oil heater with a heated asphalt storage tank. The storage tank comes in six different sizes with capacities from 10,000 to 35,000 gallons. Numerous options are available. All components are mounted on a chassis equipped for highway travel.
Heating coils —
The storage tank has serpentine heating coils. Liquid asphalt in the tank is indirectly heated by hot thermal oil flowing through the coils. The coil assembly consists of three banks with 10 runs each of 2-inch schedule 40 seamless pipe, and is contoured to fit the bottom of the tank. The accompanying table shows surface areas of the heating coils in each tank model.
Rugged construction — The storage tanks are made from 1/4-inch A-36 steel plate. Tank heads are also 1/4-inch steel, flanged and reinforced with channel stiffeners. Access ladders are provided both inside and outside the tank.
The tanks are covered with 6-inches of fiberglass insulation, and unpainted aluminum stucco embossed skin. Painted 12-gauge steel covers the insulation on the tank heads. Smooth baked-on ivory enamel skin, identical to that used on Astec products, is available as an option.
Storage tank options — Internal bulkheads are optional. They divide the storage tank into compartments, which can be used for different grades or types of liquid AC, heavy fuel or additives. The bulkheads are double-walled and insulated. Various combinations of heating coils and controls can be furnished. Optional electric heating elements are available.
Hot oil heater —
The standard circulating hot oil heater for the portable tanks is a CEI-1000 Jacketed Firebox. This compact, fuel efficient unit will heat two large tanks with pumps and connecting piping, and still have enough BTU’s left to allow a temperature rise if necessary.
An insulated helical flow jacketed firebox and an insulated multiple pass heat exchanger with baffles combine to give maximum heat transfer. The full-modulation power pressure burner ensures fuel efficiency. Micro processor controls regulate the flame safe-guard and temperature. Series Operating and Indicating Lights provide simplified operation and maintenance of systems.
All safety controls are in place. The high velocity flow rate of the centrifugal circulating pump provides high thermal oil efficiency. This pump is environmentally friendly, as it is virtually dripless. The heater is complete with an expansion tank, vent pipe, lifting eye and skid base. Consult CEI factory to determine correct heater size for heat requirements. Larger size heaters are optional. A CEI heater is safe, efficient, and dependable.
Special versions for polymers — Two special versions of the tank are available to heat and store either PMAC (polymer-modified asphalt cement) premixed at asphalt terminals or asphalt cements that incorporate GTR (ground tire rubber) mixed at the hot mix plant.
Both versions maintain the PMAC at higher than normal temperatures and constantly agitate the material. Pump and piping systems are oversized because PMAC has a higher viscosity than virgin asphalt. Motor-driven mixers, agitators, or augers are mounted in the tank and spaced for optimum agitation.
