Heats
and stores liquid asphalt cement. Also provides hot oil to heat other
components of the plant. Major components are an unloading pump,
asphalt tank, burner and fire tube, metering pump, and hot oil system.
All are mounted on a trailer. A tractor with a fifth wheel attachment
can transport the unit.
The asphalt tank has
a capacity of 15,000 gallons (56,780 liters). An unloading pump on the
gooseneck of the trailer pumps asphalt cement from tanker trucks into
the tank. The burner and fire tube maintains the temperature of the
asphalt cement in the tank. A metering pump mounted on the other end of
the trailer pumps and meters asphalt cement from the tank to the drum
mixer.
The hot oil system consists of scavenger coils in the tank and a hot
oil pump with expansion tank mounted in front of the tank. The
scavenger coils, which are immersed in the hot asphalt cement, transfer
some heat from the asphalt to oil as it is pumped through the coils.
The hot oil heats piping and other components of the plant.
